James Raymond Howland
James “Jimbo” R. Howland, a beloved father, grandfather, friend and dedicated patriot, passed away at his home on July 26, 2024.
Born in Philadelphia, Mr. Howland was the son of the late J. Raymond and Elthor R. (Stees) Howland.
A proud veteran, he served his country honorably in the U.S. Marine Corps, achieving the rank of corporal. During his service, he earned several commendations, including the Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Rifle Marksman Badge, Vietnam Service Medal and a Letter of Appreciation.
After his military service, Mr. Howland worked for ITT while also managing the Gibson County Airport. He then returned to Pennsylvania where he brought his leadership and dedication to the business world, co-founding Vail Communications in the early 1980s, a company that continues to thrive to this day.
Mr. Howland was also a skilled commercial pilot, reflecting his lifelong passion for aviation, and a member of the American Chemical Society for 50 years.
He is survived by daughter, Jessica Howland, two sons, grandchildren, Logan and Tyler; and dear friends, Jeff and Karen Cowan.
Mr. Howland will be deeply missed by his family along with numerous friends and colleagues from his various walks of life.
His legacy is one of service, dedication and unwavering patriotism. He was a true American hero, proud to have served his country and equally proud of his family and friends. Mr. Howland will be remembered for his courage, his commitment to his country, and the love he had for his family and friends. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
A memorial service was held for Mr. Howland at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, August 13, 2024 at the Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery at Parkers Crossroads.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in his memory to a veteran’s organization of choice.
Arrangements were entrusted to Replogle-Lawrence Funeral Home, Medina.
