“I told you, ‘I’m the 1972 Miami Dolphins!” I said walking in the office Monday morning with confidence.
Union City sports editor Gabriel Jackson rolled his eyes and turned to look like he was typing at his computer.
Like I could be ignored.
“Two weeks, two perfect pick’ems,” I laughed.
“Don’t you have a region golf tournament to be at, or have some stories to write,” Jackson grumbled.
But then I took it too far, as I pulled the string and the popper exploded sending confetti all over Jackson’s desk.
“I am still coming for you, and your luck will end soon,” Jackson said, sending me to get the broom.
I was a perfect 15-for-15 last week with my picks, while Jackson went 11-4.
I got all seven games right involving Obion County and Weakley County teams, and I am now 35-2 (.946 winning percentage). Jackson went 5-2, and he is now 24-13 (.649).
For the season, I am 81-9 (.900) through six weeks, while Jackson is 65-25 (.722).
Can Jackson make his move this week?
McEwen (3-2) at Dresden (3-3)
The Lions had a three-game winning streak ended last week, so Dresden will want to bounce back quickly and get back to winning before region play resumes next week.
Odom’s Pick: Dresden 16, McEwen 14
Jackson’s Pick: Dresden 15, McEwen 6
Ripley (1-5, 0-2) at Westview (6-0, 2-0 7-3A)
The Chargers are coming off a 405-yard passing performance by Graham Simpson against a quality Division II-AA team. Simpson should be off the field by halftime in this one.
Odom’s Pick: Westview 42, Ripley 6
Jackson’s Pick: Westview 44, Ripley 7
McNairy Central (3-3, 0-3 7-3A) at Obion County (3-3, 0-3)
Both of these teams started the season 3-0, but both have lost three straight games in Region 7-3A play. No one wants to lose a fourth straight. Both have shown promise at times, so can they put it all together in this one.
Odom’s Pick: McNairy Central 28, Obion County 24
Jackson’s Pick: Obion County 24, McNairy Central 22
South Fulton (4-1, 1-1 7-1A) at Gleason (0-6, 0-2)
The Red Devils are fighting for a home playoff game in the first round of the Class 1A playoffs, while Gleason is trying to find a consistent offense.
Odom’s Pick: South Fulton 35, Gleason 8
Jackson’s Pick: South Fulton 49, Gleason 14
Union City (3-3, 2-0 7-2A) at Milan (4-2, 2-1)
The Bulldogs had to battle late to pull off a win against a quality Jackson Central-Merry team. The Golden Tornadoes heave two wins in region play, but neither of those teams will make the playoffs. This will be their first tough test.
Odom’s Pick: Milan 28, Union City 12
Jackson’s Pick: Union City 21, Milan 20
Greenfield (4-2, 1-1 7-1A) at Humboldt (6-0, 3-0)
The Vikings beat the defending Region 7-1A champions last week, and now they want to beat another playoff team from the region from last season. Greenfield’s defense will have to play its best game for the Yellowjackets to win.
Odom’s Pick: Humboldt 32, Greenfield 24
Jackson’s Pick: Humboldt 30, Greenfield 23
