Top 12 high school teams in Weakley County during 2023-24 season

We continue to look back at the highlights of the 2023-24 high school school year. Last week, we looked at the top 15 most memorable games. This week we look at the top 12 teams from Gibson County during the year.

1. Dresden football – The Lions reached the Class 1A semifinals before suffering their first loss on the season. Dresden won their first 13 games of the season before McKenzie got the best of them in the semifinals to finish the season 13-1. The Lions shutout three opponents and held another to seven points. The team was led by 2023 All-Weakley County football player of the year Cameron Schlicht.

2. Westview girls soccer – For the first time in program history, the Lady Chargers reached the Class A state semifinals. Westview won 17 straight games, winning the District 12-A and Region 6-A championships along the way. The team beat Chattanooga School of Arts & Sciences in the state quarterfinals in penalty kicks. The Lady Chargers were led by 2023 All-Weakley County girls soccer player of the year Chloe Peevyhouse at goalkeeper.

3. Westview softball – The Lady Chargers lost seven players from the 2023 state championship team, but they managed to get back to the Class 2A semifinals. Westview went 23-9 on the season, winning the District 14-2A and Region 7-2A championships. Both losses in the state tournament were to eventual state champion Liberty Creek.

4. Westview girls basketball – The Lady Chargers advanced to the Class 2A state tournament for the 12th straight season. Westview ended the season with a 23-7 record, finishing as runner-up in District 14-2A and Region 7-2A behind eventual state champion Gibson County. In the state tournament, the Lady Chargers lost to Loretto, who played for the state championship. The team was led by 2023-24 All-Weakley County girls basketball player of the year McCall Sims.

5. Greenfield girls basketball – The Lady Yellowjackets reached the Class 1A state semifinals for the first time since 2020. Greenfield finished the year 23-11 after winning the District 14-1A championship and finishing runner-up in Region 7-1A. Greenfield picked up a 55-49 win over North Greene in the Class 1A quarterfinals.

6. Westview boys soccer – The Chargers advanced to the Class A state tournament for the first time since 2007. Westview finished the year with a 15-4-1 record, winning the District 12-A championship and finishing runner-up in Region 6-A before going to Forest and winning in penalty kicks in sectionals.

7. Westview boys golf – The Chargers finished fourth in the Class A state tournament, shooting a two-day score of 659 (332-327) to finish 24 strokes behind third-place Signal Mountain (635). The Chargers were led by Luke Stephenson, who finished 11th overall. Stephenson shot a 154 (77-77). Connor Newsom finished in a tie for 23rd as he shot a 163 (80-83). Ethan Hatler finished 33rd as he shot a 170 (87-83). Thomas Baker finished in a tie for 37th place as he shot a 172 (88-84).

8. Gleason boys basketball – For the first time in over 50 years, the Bulldogs played for a district championship, hosted a region quarterfinal and played in the region semifinals. Geason finished 19-13 after being runner-up in District 14-1A before losing to Humboldt in the Region 7-A semifinals. The Bulldogs were led by 2023-24 All-Weakley County boys basketball player of the year Drake Lehmkuhl.

9. Westview baseball – The Chargers finished third in Region 7-2A after being the runner-up in District 14-2A. Westview went 17-15 on the season as it battled in a tough district with Milan, Gibson County and Ripley as quality opponents.

10. Dresden baseball – The Lions won the District 14-1A championship in extra innings over Union City. They went on to finish third in Region 7-1A as the team finished the season with a 20-10 record. Dresden had to beat Union City twice in extra innings to win the district title.

11. Dresden softball – The Lady Lions fought through an undefeated regular season going 15-0 and claiming the regular season District 14-1A championship. But a pair of 1-0 losses in the district tournament sent them home early. Dresden managed regular season sweeps over South Fulton and Union City.

12. Westview football – The Chargers reached the second round of the Class 3A state playoffs and finished the season with a 7-5 record. After starting the season 0-2, Westview went 6-2 to finish out the regular season, finishing third in Region 7-3A.
