Top 15 most memorable games in Weakley County County from 2023-24 season

With the 2023-24 school year wrapping up last week with Spring Fling, I want to look back at some of the best that Weakley County County had to offer this year. And boy there were some great things that happened in the county this year.

This week, we will look back at the top 15 most memorable games from the past year

All 15 of these games had some significance behind them, and it was definitely hard to narrow it down to 15.

1. Westview girls soccer beats CSAS to advance to Class A semifinals: For the first time in program history, the Lady Chargers beat Chattanooga School of the Arts & Sciences 3-2 with a 6-5 win in penalty kicks.

With 5:35 left in regulation, Westview tied up the match 2-2 as Ashlee Brent scored from 20 yards out for her second goal of the match. The first five for both teams converted for the 5-5 tie heading to sudden death. Chanler Spendlove, Hayden Markowski, Maddie Horton, Brent and Marianne Moore converted for Westview.

On the sixth kick, Westview goalkeeper Chloe Peevyhouse, who had eight saves during the match, tipped a ball up and over the bar for the first missed kick. Westview’s Harper Jones followed and buried her kick to send Westview to the semifinals for the first time.

2. Paul Betzou nails field goal as Dresden football beat Union City in regular season: Foreign exchange student Paul Betzou nailed a 25-yard field goal as time expired to give the Lions the 31-28 victory over Union City in a game that was the difference in the Lions winning the Region 7-1A title.

Tristan Jett finished with 109 yards rushing on 14 carries, while Cameron Schlicht ran for 81 yards. Schlicht completed 13-of-19 passes for 186 yards.

3. Greenfield girls basketball beat North Greene in 1A quarterfinals: Since the Christmas break, the Lady Yellowjackets had won 17 of 20 games going into the state tournament. Greenfield won each of the four quarters in the Class 1A quarterfinals to beat North Greene 55-49.

Rayanna Fisher scored 21 points in the win, while Anastyn Vujicic added 13 points and Emma Grace Alford finished with 12 points.

4. Dresden baseball beat Union City in extra innings to win 14-1A title: Ross Finney hit an RBI single to score Landon Carter for the 7-6 win over Union City in nine innings in the District 14-1A championship. Union City took a 6-5 lead in the top of the ninth inning. And, Dresden was down to its last out when a hit by pitch and error put two runners on base. Cameron Schlicht stole home to tie the game, and Finney hit an RBI single for the walk-off win.

5. Westview girls basketball earns 12th straight state tournament appearance with win over Memphis Business: The Lady Chargers have a new record to add to the program as no team has made 12 straight appearances in the state tournament. Westview beat Memphis Business Academy 44-36 in the Class 2A sectionals to reach the Class 2A state quarterfinals.

Kylee Alexander led Westview with 15 points, while McCall Sims added 14 and Halle Trevathan finished with 11 points.

6. Dresden baseball beats Union City in extra innings to reach the 14-1A title game: With two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning, Dresden senior Tristan Jett came up to bat with runners on second and third in a tie game. Jett singled to left field, allowing Landon Carter to score, as the Lions advanced to the District 14-1A championship with a 3-2 win over Union City. Tanner Thomas went 3-for-5 with one run, while Jett went 2-for-4 with one RBI.

7. Westview girls soccer beats Cheatham County to win Region 6-1A title: Rain fell for a complete hour before the match was set to begin. The field was unplayable, but after two hours of waiting, the game was finally moved 20 miles away to a field at an elementary school. In the 26th minute, Hayden Markowski scored to put Westview up 1-0, but Cheatham County found an answer before halftime to tie it up 1-1. Markowski scored again in the second half to give Westview the region championship.

8. Greenfield girls basketball beats Union City in Region 7-1A semifinals: The Lady Yellowjackets won 36-33. Brenley Little hit a jumper from the free throw line with nine seconds remaining to put the Lady Yellowjackets up 34-33. After a Union City turnover, Rayanna Fisher hit two free throws with 1.3 seconds on the clock for the win. Rayanna Fisher finished with 17 points, while Anna Grace Abernathy added eight points.

9. Westview girls soccer beats Huntland in Class A sectionals: For the first time since 2020, the Lady Chargers booked a spot in the state tournament with a 2-1 win over Huntland. It was in the eighth minute when Maddie Horton broke through the defense and scored one-on-one with the goalkeeper. Westview doubled the score 17 minutes later as Harper Jones scored off a corner kick that bounced around the box before landing at her feet with 15:35 left in the first half.

10. Gleason boys basketball beat Halls in the Region 7-1A quarterfinals: The Bulldogs hadn’t hosted a region tournament game since 1969, which was the year that Gleason made the state tournament. Gleason pulled out an 82-65 victory over Halls in the Region 7-1A quarterfinals. The Bulldogs hit 17-of-19 free throws in the final eight minutes to score 31 points in the quarter. Drake Lehmkuhl scored 25 points to lead Gleason, while Kade Sawyers added 23 points and Garrett Pinkston finished with 22 points.

11. Greenfield girls basketball beats Middle College in Class 1A sectionals: The Lady Yellowjackets went on the road and beat Middle College 56-48 to earn a spot in the state tournament. Trailing 12-11 after one quarter, Emma Grace Alford scored nine points in the second quarter as Greenfield took a 30-28 lead, and then the defense held the opposition to eight points in the third quarter. Rayanna Fisher and Alford scored 18 points each to lead the Lady Yellowjackets, while Anna Grace Abernathy added nine points.

12. Gleason girls basketball beat Dresden in opening round of District 14-1A tournament: After losing to the Lady Lions by eight and 36 points during the regular season, the Lady Bulldogs pulled out a 57-55 victory to open the district tournament. Senior Autumn MIngle scored 33 points. In the fourth quarter, she hit two key baskets and went 7-of-8 from the free throw line.

13. Westview softball beats Alcoa to reach Class 2A semifinals: The Lady Chargers had to hold on late as the Lady Tornadoes scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning before Westview could record the final two outs for the 4-3 victory. Westview took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single by Sarah Beth Byars, and the lead increased to 3-0 in the second inning on a two-RBI single by Addie Roberts. The last run for Westview scored the top of the seventh in what would be the game-winning run as Annelise Hayden hit an RBI single for the 4-0 lead.

14. Gleason boys basketball beat South Fulton in the District 14-1A semifinals: For the Bulldogs to earn the right to play Union City for the district title, they had to come back from a 20-points deficit in the first half to beat South Fulton 58-50. The Red Devils led 23-5 after one quarter and held a 20-point lead early in the second quarter. Gleason’s defense came up big in the third quarter, holding South Fulton to four points, as the Bulldogs took a 36-33 lead into the fourth quarter. Garrett Pinkston scored 20 points to lead the Bulldogs, while Drake Lehmkuhl added 19 points and Kade Sawyers finished with 11 points.

15. Westview boys soccer beats Huntingdon to win District 12-A title: For over 78 minutes, the Chargers battled Huntingdon to a scoreless tie in the district championship game. With around one minute remaining, Westview scores the game-winner to avoid overtime and win the district crown.
