Top 15 high school teams in Gibson County during 2023-24 season

The Gibson County girls basketball team won the Class 2A state championship in March.

We continue to look back at the highlights of the 2023-24 high school school year. Last week, we looked at the top 15 most memorable games. This week we look at the top 15 teams from Gibson County during the year.

1. Gibson County girls basketball – The Lady Pioneers won the Class 2A state championship in March. They went 38-1 throughout the season, winning the District 14-2A and Region 7-2A championships on the way to reaching the state tournament. The one loss was against Crockett County 46-40 in the first game of the 2024 half of the season. In the state tournament, Gibson County beat some powerhouse teams to win the title – Huntingdon (58-49), York Institute (38-35) and Loretto (49-37). The Lady Pioneers were led by Miss Basketball winner and 2023-24 All-Gibson County girls basketball player of the year Micah Hart, a Bethel signee.

2. South Gibson girls soccer – The Lady Hornets reached the Class AA state semifinals for the second time in program history. South Gibson ended the season with a 15-5-2, winning the District 14-AA championship and Region 7-AA championship. The team beat Tennessee High 1-0 in the Class AA quarterfinals and kept Station Camp scoreless for 72 minutes in the state semifinals before losing 3-0. The Lady Hornets were led by 2023 All-Gibson County girls soccer player of the year Sierra Healy.

3. South Gibson baseball – The Hornets won a program record 31 games on the way to finishing in the top six of the Class 3A state tournament. South Gibson went 31-12 on the season, finishing as the District 13-3A and Region 7-3A runner-up on the way to making the state tournament. South Gibson beat Station Camp 5-1 in the opening round of the Class 3A state tournament before being eliminated with two close losses.

4. South Gibson softball – The Lady Hornets reached the Class 3A state tournament, finishing as one of the top eight teams in the state. South Gibson finished the season 29-10-2, winning the District 13-3A and Region 7-3A championships on the way to reaching the state tournament. South Gibson had nine players hit a total of 36 home runs throughout the season.

5. Milan baseball – The Bulldogs reached the Class 2A state tournament for the second straight season, which was a first in program history. Milan finished in the Class 2A state semifinals after winning a third straight District 14-2A title and finishing runner-up in Region 7-2A. Milan opened the state tournament with an 11-0 win over Alcoa, and both losses in tournament play came against eventual state champion Loretto.

6. South Gibson girls basketball – The Lady Hornets struggled at times throughout the season with injuries and inexperience, but when it mattered, they elevated their play. South Gibson reached the Class 3A state semifinals to finish the season with a 21-16 record. The Lady Hornets were fourth in District 13-3A but finished as the Region 7-3A runner-up and beat Millington to reach the state tournament.

7. Milan volleyball – For the first time in program history, the Lady Bulldogs reached the Class A state tournament. Milan went 23-10 as they won the District 13-A and Region 7-A championship before earning a forfeit win in sectionals to reach the state tournament. The Lady Bulldogs were led by 2023 All-Gibson County volleyball player of the year Claire Nelson.

8. Milan football – The Bulldogs went 9-3 with one of the losses coming against the Class 2A state champion Riverside. Milan won the first five games of the season before losing to Huntingdon, and the team reached the Class 2A second round before losing to Huntingdon. The Bulldogs were led by 2023 All-Gibson County football player of the year Jaydon Peete.

9. Gibson County volleyball – The Lady Pioneers made a second straight trip to the Class A state tournament. They were the District 13-A and Region 7-A runner-up, but Gibson County went on the road to Middleton in sectionals and picked up a win. Gibson County finished the season with a 25-17 record.

10. Humboldt boys basketball – The Vikings reached the Class 1A sectionals before suffering a loss to Middle College on the road. The duo of senior Fred Moore and junior Stephon Shivers were named co-All-Gibson County boys basketball players of the year. Humboldt finished with a 22-10 record, winning the District 13-A title and finishing as the Region 7-A runner-up.

11. South Gibson girls tennis – The Lady Hornets finished as the Region 7-AA runner-up after winning the District 14-AA championship. In the district title match, the Lady Hornets trailed 3-2 after singles play, but they won both doubles matches to beat Chester County 4-3.

12. Milan boys soccer – The Bulldogs reached the Class A sectionals for the first time since 2007 and only the second time in program history. Milan ended the season with a 10-7-3 record, finishing as runner-up in District 14-A and Region 7-A behind Madison.

13. Peabody girls basketball – The Lady Tide reached the Region 7-2A semifinals before being eliminated by the eventual state champion Gibson County. Peabody went 19-13 on the season, finishing third in DIstrict 14-2A. Seven of the 13 losses came against Gibson County or Westview.

14. Gibson County softball – The Lady Pioneers reached the Region 7-2A semifinals before being eliminated by Riverside. Gibson County went 15-13 on the season, finishing runner-up in District 14-2A behind Westview. The team went on an eight-game winning streak in late April.

15. South Gibson football – The Hornets finished second in Region 6-4A, ending the season with an 8-3 record. South Gibson beat Chester County, Lexington, North Side and South Side in region play.
