Gibson County names Tyler Tate boys basketball coach

Tyler Tate

On Wednesday, Gibson County named a new head boys basketball coach, and it is a familiar face to Pioneer fans. Tyler Tate will be the new boys basketball coach.

“We are so excited to have Coach Tate and his wife, Lauren, join The Pioneer Nation!,” Gibson County athletic director Michael Wickersham said via press release. “When you lose a coach like we did, you always worry about how to fill those shoes. I can honestly tell you we got the right man for this job. We love the energy and the culture he is bringing to our basketball program. His desire to mold these boys into strong young men and having them become winners on and off the court will make him a perfect fit here at Gibson County!”

Tate replaces Justin Lowery, who left to become the boys basketball coach at McKenzie.

“I am excited for this opportunity to continue to build and grow this program!,” Tate said via press release. “My goal is to create a culture of excellence and integrity on and off the court. I can’t wait to start and get to work with the guys!”

Tate has been teaching at Rutherford Junior High School for the last six years and has been coaching the Gibson County Middle School programs in some capacity during that time.

Prior to coaching middle school, Tate was the assistant coach for the women’s basketball team at Bethel University. During his time there, the Lady Wildcats went 70-22 with two regular season conference championships and three national tournament appearances.

Tate is a graduate of Bradford High School and then completed his undergraduate degree in 2011 at Bethel University in physical education. He earned his Master of Arts in Education from Bethel in 2013.
