Top 15 Gibson County high school most memorable games for 2025-26

Without a doubt, the 2025-26 high school sports season in Gibson County had some of the most memorable games across West Tennessee.
Gibson County teams played at the highest level in the state.

So here is a look back at the top 15 most memorable games that involved a Gibson County team:

1. South Gibson boys basketball advances to Region 7-3A title game on Cooper Yarbro 3: At the overtime buzzer, Yarbro hit a 3-pointer from the corner to send the Hornets to a 56-54 win over South Side. The Hornets had a shot at the end of regulation to pick up the win, but it was blocked and the game went to overtime tied 47-47. In overtime, Braxton Gibbons hit two free throws, Jaxon Young and Yarbro hit jumpers and Richard Addo hit a free throw, but the Hornets trailed 54-53 going into the final seconds. Jaxon Young finished with 17 points, while Yarbro added 12 points.

2. Humboldt boys basketball beats Eagleville in Class 1A semifinals on Jakevious Graves 3-pointer: In the Class 1A semifinals, the Vikings went up against an undefeated Eagleville. With five seconds remaining, Graves took a pass from Terrell Cole and hit a 3-pointer on the final play of the game to send Humboldt to a 65-62 victory over Eagleville. The Vikings held a 10-point lead with 6:19 to play in the game. Graves scored 31 points in the game to lead Humboldt, while Darion Taylor added 21 points.

3. South Gibson football beat Springfield for first-ever appearance in 4A semifinals: Making the program’s third appearance in the state quarterfinal, the Hornets finally made it through to the 4A semifinals with a 27-21 overtime victory over Springfield. On the second play of overtime, Cade Beaver intercepted a Springfield pass in the end zone to end the Yellow Jackets’ possession. On South Gibson’s first offensive play, Tyshaun Jeter scored from 10 yards out for the game-winning touchdown. Jeter had 19 carries for 107 yards and three touchdowns, while Beaver had 13 tackles, including one tackle for loss.

4. Milan baseball wins first state championship in 22 years with 3-0 victory over White House-Heritage: With Milan leading 1-0 in the third inning, the game was sent to a rain and lightning delay to resume close to four hours later. JP Scott hit a solo home run to left field to give Milan the 1-0 lead in the second inning before rain came in the bottom of the third postponed the game. James Carter picked up his 13th win of the season with a complete-game one-hitter with nine strikeouts and two walks. The delay came with Milan having one runner on first base with two outs. Carter was the first batter after the break, and he hit a double that allowed Johnson to score on an error for the 2-0 lead. The Bulldogs scored one more run in the bottom of the sixth inning as Mallard scored on an error for the 3-0 lead.

5. Milan baseball opens Class 2A state tournament with 1-0 win over Smith County: The pitching duel between Milan’s James Carter and Smith County’s Riley Martin – an Alabama commit – brought a quick game. Carter pitched a four hitter with four strikeouts and no walks over 6.2 innings with a total of 75 pitches. Martin allowed one run on three hits with eight strikeouts and one walk. The only run came on a solo home run by Johnson to lead off the top of the sixth inning. The home run allowed the only time that a Milan batter got past second base.

6. South Gibson boys soccer beats Signal Mountain in Class AA quarterfinals: In the Hornets’ previous three state tournament appearances, the team had never scored a goal. That ended this season as South Gibson picked up a 2-1 victory over Signal Mountain in the Class AA quarterfinals. At the 29:50 mark, Jonah Clouse put South Gibson ahead 1-0 and scored the program’s first ever goal off a free kick taken by Greg Suiter. But six minutes later, Signal Mountain tied the match 1-1 to send the game to halftime tied 1-1. With 26:03 remaining in the match, Richard Addo scored on a rebound off a shot by Gabe Chatman.

7. Peabody boys basketball beats Jackson Central-Merry in Region 7-2A semifinals: In the Region 7-2A semifinals, the Golden Tide went up against a 2025 Class 2A state quarterfinalist in Jackson Central-Merry. The game went back-and-forth throughout, but as the final buzzer approached, the Cougars led 59-58. Senior JaMarcus Haynes drove into the lane and took a jump shot that sent the Golden Tide to the 60-59 victory over JCM and earned the team a spot in the Class 2A sectionals. Peabody had four players score in double figures led by Hayes with 16 points, while Noah Woolfork added 15 points.

8. Bradford softball wins first-ever region championship over Dresden: In front of a large group of fans, the Lady Red Devils beat Dresden 5-3 to win the Region 7-1A championship and earn the first-ever stat tournament berth after a forfeit win over Manassas. Cara Copous picked up her ninth win of the season as she pitched 4.1 innings of no-hit softball with one strikeout and one walk. Bradford took a 2-0 lead in the first inning as Abby Glisson hit an RBI single and Calley Graves followed two batters later with an RBI single. Dresden fought back and took a 3-2 lead in the top of the third inning. But in the bottom of the inning, Paige Allen hit an RBI single and Olivia McAfee followed with an RBI single for the 4-3 lead. The Lady Red Devils added one more run in the fifth inning on an RBI groundout by Glisson.

9. South Gibson girls soccer beats Lakeland Prep during regular season: With 14.8 seconds remaining on the clock, Rylee Hood scored her third goal of the game on a free kick to send the Lady Hornets to the 3-2 victory over Lakeland Prep. It was South Gibson’s sixth win of the season.

10. South Gibson boys come back to beat Lakeland Prep in Region 7-AA semifinals: The Hornets trailed 1-0 and 2-1 during the must-win region semifinal. Jonah Clouse scored the first goal to tie the game 1-1, and Jonathan Lewis had a free kick deflect off a Lakeland Prep player into the goal for the second goal to tie it 2-2. With 3:04 remaining, Richard Addo scored the game winner off a rebound to send South Gibson through to the region championship.

11. Gibson County girls basketball wins Region 7-2A title over Westview: After losing to the Lady Chargers in the previous three meetings of the season, the Lady Pioneers picked up a 43-38 victory in the region championship over Westview. Gibson County held the opposition to four points in the fourth quarter and a total of 13 points in the second half to rally for the victory. Westview led 25-22 at halftime. Sania Reeves scored 13 points to lead Gibson County, while A’Kira Riding added 11 points.

12. Milan baseball rallies in Game 2 of Class 2A sectional to beat Riverside: After a shutout pitching performance by James Carter in Game 1, the Bulldogs trailed 4-2 going into the seventh inning of Game 2. But an RBI single by Carter, a suicide squeeze bunt by JP Scott and a two-RBI double by Lucas Morris helped Milan rally in the top of the seventh to take the lead. Cater picked up his second win of the day, pitching 1.1 innings of relief and giving up one hit with four strikeouts and no walks.

13. Milan softball beats Waverly in District 12-2A tournament: After losing the tournament opener, the Lady Bulldogs faced elimination against Waverly. Waverly took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, which stood until the bottom of the sixth inning. Mia Pearson hit a three-run home run to give Milan the 3-1 lead. Camryn Greene earned the win with a complete game in the circle, allowing one run on three hits with 10 strikeouts and no walks.

14. Bradford baseball forces second District 13-1A championship game: The Red Devils needed two wins on Saturday to win the District 13-1A championship over Halls. In Game 1, Halls held a 4-0 lead going into the top of the sixth inning. Guner Skerrett scored on an error, Jax Street stole home, Trevor Harringon hit an RBI single, Braydon Graham scored on a bases-loaded hit by pitch and Alex Massey scored on a bases-loaded walk. Eli Leyhue earned the win on the mound with three innings of no-hit relief with one strikeout and no walks.

15. South Gibson boys basketball beats USJ to start January schedule: Koen Thomas hit a layup with three seconds remaining to break a tie and send the Hornets to the 48-46 victory. The Bruins held a 40-37 lead after three quarters. But South Gibson’s defense held USJ to six points in the final quarter. Offensively, Richard Addo had a basket and two free throws, Ty Eddie had a basket and Thomas had a basket and free throw before the game-winning basket ended the fourth quarter. Thomas finished with 22 points, while Addo added 14 points
