Odom vs. Jackson: High School Football Pick’em First Round

“It’s playoff time in Tennessee!”

“Yes Michael, it is definitely playoff time,” Union City sports editor Gabriel Jackson replied.

“In five weeks, we will be getting ready for the state championships in Chattanooga,” I replied.

“Well, let’s just hope an Obion County or Weakley County team can make a playoff run,” Jackson said. “I like Westview’s chances though.”

“It will be interesting to see how Dresden and Greenfield fare in Memphis or if South Fulton can keep rolling or if Union City can figure out Fairley’s stingy defense,” I said.

“An speaking of stingy…,” I laughed. “How about by 14-1 record last week.”

“Oh brother, here we go,” Jackson said with an eye roll.”

I added two games to my lead as I had a 14-1 record compared to a 12-3 record for Jackson.

I went a perfect 6-0 in Obion County and Weakley County games last week to increase my record to 56-6 (.903 winning percentage), while Jackson went 4-2 for a 42-20 (.677).

Jackson missed Huntingdon’s win over Union City and Bolivar’s win over Obion County. We both missed Lakeland Prep’s win over Humboldt.

For the regular season, I went 141-17 (.892), while Jackson is 120-38 (.759).

Here is hoping for a good week of playoffs for teams in Northwest Tennessee:

Wooddale (5-5) at Westview (10-0)

The Chargers are a No. 1 seed and should have no issue getting past the No. 4 seed out of Memphis. Wooddale does bring a two-game winning streak into the playoffs.

Odom’s Pick: Westview 42, Wooddale 6

Jackson’s Pick: Westview 36, Wooddale 6

Union City (5-5) at Fairley (7-3)

The Golden Tornadoes are coming off a 42-0 loss. When they lost to Milan 55-0, Union City followed that with back-to-back wins. Can the Golden Tornadoes right the ship once again?

Odom’s Pick: Fairley 28, Union City 7

Jackson’s Pick: Fairley 21, Union City 17

Oakhaven (5-5) at South Fulton (9-1)

The Red Devils carry an eight-game winning streak into the playoffs, but Oakhaven has won three straight games of their own. The key will be can South Fulton’s defense stop the Hawks’offense.

Odom’s Pick: South Fulton 32, Oakhaven 12

Jackson’s Pick: South Fulton 28, Oakhaven 24

Dresden (5-5) at Westwood (6-3)

The Lions head to Memphis for the first round of the playoffs. The Longhorns have won five of their last six games, but Dresden’s passing attack will be something that Westwood hasn’t seen anything like this year.

Odom’s Pick: Dresden 27, Westwood 21

Jackson’s Pick: Dresden 53, Westwood 44

Greenfield (6-4) at Middle College (8-1)

The Bulldogs’ two losses have come against Division II-AA opposition. Middle College also reached the Class 1A quarterfinals last year. Greenfield will have to have its best defensive effort to pull the upset.

Odom’s Pick: Middle College 24, Greenfield 21

Jackson’s Pick: Middle College 14, Greenfield 12
