The Peabody administration didn’t have to look far for its new high school football coach. Defensive coordinator Tob Vowell has been promoted to head football coach of the Golden Tide.
Vowell replaces Shane Jacobs, who resigned two weeks ago to be named Head of the Upper School at University School of Jackson.
“In all my years of coaching, I can’t say there’s been one defining moment that keeps me going,” Vowell said. via press release. “You don’t have to win a state championship for a team to come together. Every team that has come through here is special in its own right.
“The most rewarding part is watching growth- in the weight room, during practice, and on the field. Even in the tough years, when the players graduate, they look back and still remember the good times and know that being dedicated to the game of football was worth it.”
Vowell has been the defensive coordinator at Peabody since 2016, helping lead the football team to three state championships in 2018, ’19 and ’20 and playing a key role in the Golden Tide’s 44-game winning streak, which was the best in the nation at the time.
Prior to coming to Peabody, Vowell worked at North Side. He was head coach from 2009-15, leading the Indians to a 62-22 record with two undefeated regular seasons and two region championships. He served as North Side’s defensive coordinator the three years prior to being named head coach.
Vowell is a 1989 graduate of South Fulton and played college footbll at UT Martin from 1989-93.
Fellow coaches describe him as energetic, enthusiastic, and committed to his players. He has the heart of a child and the resolve of a lion. Colleagues and players agree unanimously that he leads by example, never asking more of his team than he would give. He inspires grit, cultivates character, and invests deeply in the personal and athletic development of every player.
Tab and his wife Tracey are the proud parents of three children: Jake (23), Chase (19), and Lauren (13).
