Top 15 Gibson County high school teams for 2025-26 season

The Milan baseball team won the Class 2A state championship with a 3-0 win over White House-Heritage in the championship game.
In the last couple of weeks, we have looked at the most memorable games and the top coaching jobs from the 2025-26 high school season involving Gibson County area teams.
Now, we will look at the top 15 teams that came from this county throughout the school year:
1. Milan baseball – After a 22-year wait, the Bulldogs won the Class 2A state championship with a 3-0 victory over White-House Heritage. Milan went 29-10 for the season. After finishing the District 12-2A as the runner-up, the Bulldogs won the Region 6-2A championship and swept Riverside in a sectional series to reach the state tournament. Behind a nine-member senior class, Milan went 4-0 in the state tournament to win the title.
2. Milan football – The Bulldogs won the first 13 games of the 2025 season. Milan shut out three opponents and held five other opponents to 10 or less points. The Bulldogs beat Huntingdon 34-9 in Week 3, but in the Class 2A semifinals, the Mustangs won 35-34 as they went on to win the Class 2A state championship. Milan outscored its opponents 387-116 leading up the semifinal game. Jaydon Peete was a finalist for the 2025 Tennessee Titans Class 2A Mr. Football award.
3. South Gibson football – For the first time in program history, the Hornets reached the Class 4A semifinals before losing to Pearl-Cohn. South Gibson finished the season with a 10-4 record and had a nine-game winning streak after starting the season 1-3. The Hornets went 6-1 in Region 7-4A play to win the region championship. In the playoffs, South Gibson beat Millington and Spring Hill before beating Springfield in overtime to advance to the semifinals.
4. Humboldt boys basketball – The Vikings finished as the Class 1A state runner-up, falling to Jackson County in the championship game. Humboldt finished the season with a 23-7 record after winning the District 13-1A and Region 7-1A championships, while going 16-0 against Class 1A teams leading to the state championship game. The Vikings beat Booker T. Washington in the Class 1A sectionals before beating Unaka and Eagleville in the first two games of the state tournament.
5. South Gibson boys soccer – The Hornets reached the Class AA state semifinals for the first time in program history. South Gibson scored its first goal in a state tournament match in beating Signal Mountain 2-1 in the state quarterfinals. South Gibson went 17-4-2 and finished as the District 13-AA and Region 7-AA runner-up.
6. South Gibson boys basketball – The Hornets advanced to the Class 3A state tournament for the first time in program history after losing in the Class 3A sectionals the previous three trips to that round of the postseason. South Gibson went 23-10 on the season and won the District 13-3A championship before beating McNairy Central, South Side in overtime and North Side to win the Region 7-3A title.
7. Peabody boys basketball – The Golden Tide reached the Class 2A state tournament, but they had to play eventual champion Chattanooga Prep in the quarterfinals. Peabody finished the season with a 25-7 record and finished as the District 14-2A and Region 7-2A runner-up to Westview, but the team went to Memphis East and picked up a win in a Class 2A sectional.
8. South Gibson girls soccer – The Lady Hornets still made it to the Class AA state tournament after losing a strong senior class. South Gibson finished the season with a 13-7 record after finishing as the District 13-3A runner-up and Region 7-3A runner-up.
9. South Gibson girls basketball – The Lady Hornets had a ton of potential last season, and they beat eventual Class 3A state champion Dyersburg three times during the season, including in the District 13-3A championship game. Dyersburg beat them on a pair of free throws with little time on the clock to win the Region 7-3A championship, and South Gibson played their worst game of the season in the Class 3A sectionals at Covington.
10. Gibson County girls basketball – The Lady Pioneers reached the Class 2A state quarterfinals in the final season under Mitch Wilkins, who retired at the end of the season. Gibson County went 25-10, finishing as the District 14-2A runner-up before winning the Region 7-2A championship to push the team back to the state tournament.
11. Peabody football – The Golden Tide won the first eight games of the season before finishing the season with a 9-3 record. Peabody was the No. 3 seed from Region 7-2A, beating Mitchell in the first round of the Class 2A playoffs before losing to East Robertson.
12. Milan boys basketball – The Bulldogs reached the Class 2A sectionals for the third time in four years. Milan won the District 12-2A and Region 6-2A championships to advance to the sectional round. The Bulldogs finished with a 17-11 record.
13. Gibson County volleyball – The Lady Pioneers reached the Class A state tournament for the fourth straight season. They won the District 13-A and Region 7-A championships and finished with a 27-14 record.
14. South Gibson baseball – Going into the school year, the Hornets had the potential to be one of the top teams in the state in Class 3A. But three ace pitchers got hurt throughout the year and limited South Gibson’s pitching rotation. This team still went 21-12 and finished as the No. 2 seed going into the District 13-3A tournament before finishing third in the tournament.
15. Bradford softball – The Lady Red Devils reached the Class 1A state tournament for the first time in program history. Bradford was the District 13-1A runner-up but won the Region 7-1A championship to advance to the state tournament. The team finished the season with a 15-14 record.
