Top 15 rising sophomores in Weakley County for the 2024-25 school year

With the 2024-25 school year approaching, we have looked back at the top 15 rising seniors and rising juniors in high school athletics in Weakley County.

Today, we look at the top 15 rising sophomores, meaning these players made an impact as a freshman:

1. Ashlee Brent (Westview girls soccer, basketball) – Brent has shown the potential to be a true star for the Lady Chargers. She helped the soccer team reach the Class A semifinals as she scored 21 goals and added 13 assists. She also played point guard for the basketball team before missing the postseason due to injury.

2. Rayanna Fisher (Greenfield girls basketball) – Fisher was a scoring leader for the Lady Yellowjackets as they got back to the Class 1A state semifinals. She averaged 14 points, five rebounds, 2.8 assists and 2.4 steals.

3. Gage Byington (Gleason football) – Byington is also a key contributor on the basketball team, but he is turning into a high-level wide receiver on the football field. In a six-win season, he caught 32 passes for 650 yards and 13 touchdowns, averaging over 20 yards per reception.

4. Alaina Uselton (Westview girls cross country) – Uselton reached the Class A-AA state meet in her freshman season after finishing third in the Region 7 A-AA meet with a time of 20:45.29. At state, she finished 33rd with a time of 20:41.81.

5. Finn Snider (Westview football) – Snider wasn’t built like a freshman, and he didn’t play like one either. As a linebacker, he helped lead the Chargers to seven wins and a spot in the Class 3A second round as he recorded 111 total tackles with 10 tackles for loss, six sacks, one fumble recovery and two pass break-ups.

6. Cruze Porter (Greenfield boys basketball) – Porter was a spark to the Yellowjackets’ program as it rebuilt last year. He averaged 12.1 points, 2.1 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.1 steals, while shooting 38 percent from 3-point range.

7. Miles Brown (Westview football, boys basketball) – Brown was a quality defensive back for the Chargers as they reached the Class 3A second round, and he helped the basketball team reach the Region 7-2A semifinals. In football, he had 24 tackles with 10 solo tackles, one forced fumble, one interception and three pass break-ups, while he also had 11 catches for 116 yards and six carries for 32 yards. In basketball, he averaged 5.3 points and 2.8 rebounds, while shooting 43.1 percent from 2-point range.

8. Will Edwards (Greenfield baseball) – Edwards helped the Yellowjackets to a third-place finish in District 14-1A during the regular season as he went 5-3 over 42 innings with 66 strikeouts and a 1.17 ERA. He also had seven doubles at the plate.

9. Deegan Arant (Greenfield boys cross country) – Arant finished 21st in the Region 7 A-AA meet as he finished with a time of 18:09.12. He was consistently in the top 20 of races throughout the season.

10. Kinzer Pratt (Greenfield football) – Pratt brought in a leg that is rarely seen in freshmen. He put in the work to his kicking game as he connected on 16-of-19 extra points and hit both field goals attempted.

11. Asa Barnes (Westview football) – Barned played a key role in the Chargers reaching the second round of the Class 3A playoffs as he recorded 51 total tackles with 12 solo, one fumble recovery, five tackles for loss, two interceptions, three pass break-ups and one blocked kick to go with 28 carries for 255 yards and three touchdowns.

12. Christian Pash (Dresden boys cross country, track & field) – Pash showed his ability to run distance was a strong rookie season. In cross country, he finished 43rd in the Region 7 A-AA meet as he finished with a time of 19:36.93. In track, he competed in the 800-meter run and 1600-meter run at the Class A West sub-sectional at Union City. He was 13th in the 800 with a time of 2:24.71 and 12th in the 1600 with a time of 5:32.54.

13. Anthony Green (Greenfield boys basketball) – Green got better as the 2023-24 season progressed as he showed his ability to get to the rim. He was a constant as the Yellowjackets went through a season of rebuilding.

14. Annabelle Lovell (Westview cross country) – Lovell showed the ability to run for distance. She finished 35th in the Region A-AA meet with a time of 24:58.29.

15. Ty Keeling (Gleason baseball) – Keeling stepped on the mound and showed the ability to give the Bulldogs some quality minutes. He went 2-1 and picked up a save as he struckout 24 batters.
