Vikings’ defense shuts out McNairy Central

Fayette Academy’s Hayden Graves (57) makes a tackle against McNairy Central during a Week 1 high school football game at McNairy Central.
With a young team, there were definite question marks going into the season for Fayette Academy. But the Vikings seemed to answer some of those questions in Week 1.
Fayette Academy opened the season with a 14-0 victory over McNairy Central.
The Vikings (1-0) will travel to county rival Rossville Christian on Friday for Week 2 action.
Fayette Academy’s defense graduated some key defensive players, but this year’s defense pitched a shutout in the first game of the season.
McNairy Central had 240 yards of offense, including 171 rushing yards, but the Vikings made sure to keep them out of the end zone.
Both Fayette Academy touchdowns came in the first quarter.
New quarterback Harris Armour connected with Clay Anderson for a seven-yard touchdown pass for the 7-0 lead early.
Hardy Armour picked up a fumble and returned it 75 yards soon thereafter as the Vikings’ lead grew to 14-0.
What followed was three quarters with neither team finding the end zone in a defensive battle.
Hardy Armour finished with 81 rushing yards on 25 carries with a long of 19 yards.
Harris Armour completed 3-of-10 passes for 45 yards with Anderson finishing with two receptions for 34 yards and one touchdown.
Fayette Academy had 141 yards of total offense.

Where: Away
Record: 1-0
Week 1 result: Beat Middleton 53-0

What to know: After a seven-year hiatus, this Fayette County matchup returns to the field. In the three meetings before the hiatus, Fayette Academy outscored Rossville Christian 139-6, but the Wolfpack’s last win in the series was in 2014. Rossville Christian put up lots of points in Week 1, but the Vikings will bring a much better defensive effort. McNairy Central was supposed to have a better team in Justin Truett’s second season, but the Vikings shut that down. Fayette Academy will just have to keep the Wolfpacks’ playmakers contained.
