“Oh, come on in, Michael,” Victor Parkins said as I stumbled in the office door Monday morning.

“I don’t want to hear it,” I replied. “That was not a good start to the season for my picks.”

“Oh, I know, but my picks sure looked good,” Parkins smirked.

“That’s OK, just call me the comeback kid,” I replied with a chuckle.

Parkins took a two-game lead on me after Week 1 action, as he went 13-2 and I went 11-4.

We both missed Perry County’s win over Greenfield. The other miss for Parkins came as North Side beat Jackson Central-Merry.

I got the North Side win correct, but I missed Trinity Christian Academy’s win over Dresden, Lexington’s win over Bolivar and Huntingdon’s win over McKenzie.

Parkins has a winning percentage of .867, while Odom has a winning percentage of .733.

So here is hoping for better in Week 2:

South Gibson (0-1) at Milan (1-0)

When: 7 p.m., Friday

Picking this one is never easy. Just look at last season. South Gibson finished with four wins, while Milan played for the Class 2A state championship. But the Bulldogs only won the Week 1 matchup by six points.

Peabody (1-0) at Humboldt (0-1)

When: 7 p.m., Friday

After a two-year hiatus, these two Gibson County teams are back playing each other. The Golden Tide looked good in a win over Ripley, including a running clock in the second half. The Vikings have to correct some things that went wrong against Halls.

The Pioneers took a big loss last week, and an improved Obion County team comes to town in Week 2.

The War Eagles are coming off a big win to open the Jay Taylor era, but they are going to face a Fayette-Ware team that is athletic all over the field. West Carroll will have to contain their speed to have a chance to pull out the win.
