Top 15 high school teams in Gibson County from the 2024-25 season

Last week, we looked at the top 15 most memorable games involving Gibson County teams during the 2024-25 school year. Now we look back at the best teams to come out of this county last year.

While no team won a state championship, multiple teams made strong postseason tournament runs.

1. Milan football – The Bulldogs played for the Class 2A state championship, losing to Marion County 17-7 in the title game. After losing to Jackson Central-Merry in Week 5, Milan rattled off 10 straight wins to reach the title game, going 13-2 on the season. Milan avenged that loss to JCM with a 14-7 overtime win in the Class 2A second round. Running back Jaydon Peete won the Tennessee Titans Mr. Football award for Class 2A and was the 2024 All-Gibson County Football player of the year.

2. South Gibson baseball – The Hornets went 34-11 and finished in the Class 3A semifinals. South Gibson was put on the same half of the bracket as eventual champion Greeneville. The Hornets beat them to force a second semifinal game but couldn’t get the second win to get to the championship game. South Gibson was the District 13-3A runner-up but won the Region 7-3A championship over Dyer County before sweeping Covington in two games in the Class 3A sectionals. The Hornets were led by two NCAA Division I commitments in Cade Allen (Tennessee) and Tommy Baker (MTSU).

3. South Gibson girls basketball – For the third time in three seasons, the Lady Hornets reached the Class 3A semifinals. South Gibson went 28-9 and finished as the District 13-3A and Region 7-3A runner-up. The Lady Hornets were the only team to beat Westview – the Class 2A state champions – this season. South Gibson beat Munford 59-6 in sectionals and beat Cocke County 43-39 in the state quarterfinals. Sophomore Jade Reed was named the 2024-25 All-Gibson County girls basketball player of the year.

4. Humboldt boys basketball – The Vikings made a run to the Class 1A state semifinals before losing to eventual champion Chattanooga Prep. Humboldt won the District 13-1A and Region 7-1A championships and finished 29-6 overall. Kendrick Taylor hit a put back at the buzzer to beat Memphis Academy of Science & Engineering 51-49 in sectionals and beat North Greene 54-35 in the state quarterfinals. Taylor was named the 2024-25 All-Gibson County boys basketball player of the year.

5. South Gibson girls soccer – The Lady Hornets reached the Class AA state tournament for the seventh straight season. South Gibson won the District 13-AA and Region 7-AA championships before beating Munford 6-1 to head back to the state tournament. The Lady Hornets won 11 straight matches before the loss in the state quarterfinals to Signal Mountain. Aubrey Colvin was named the 2024 All-Gibson County girls soccer player of the year.

6. South Gibson boys soccer – The Hornets reached the Class AA state tournament, falling to Franklin County 1-0 in the quarterfinals in a game that was played over two days due to a lightning delay. South Gibson played a tough schedule and went 12-7-1. The Hornets scored four unanswered goals to beat Crockett County 4-3 in the District 13-AA championship and finished as the Region 7-AA runner-up before going to Brighton in sectionals and picking up a 2-0 victory. Landon Brown became the first South Gibson player to be invited to the THSSCA/TACA All-Star Game.

7. South Gibson softball – The Lady Hornets had one of the best batting orders in West Tennessee, but the Class 3A sectionals just wasn’t their game as they lost to Covington 4-2.
South Gibson won the District 13-3A championship and finished as the Region 7-3A runner-up. The Lady Hornets finished with a 25-8 record but was one win short of a second straight berth in the Class 3A state tournament.

8. Milan softball – The Lady Bulldogs reached the Class 2A state tournament for the first time in program history. Milan went 25-13 with five of those losses coming against Westview. They were the District 14-2A and Region 7-2A runners-up to Westview. Milan went on the road and beat Lakeland Prep 15-0 to advance to the state tournament with a no-hitter from Camryn Greene in the circle.

9. Gibson County volleyball – The Lady Pioneers advanced to the Class A state tournament for the third straight season. Gibson County finished with a 33-9 record, winning the District 13-A and Region 7-A championships before beating Middle College 3-0 in sectionals. Hannah Prestininzi was named the 2024 All-Gibson County volleyball player of the year.

10. Bradford baseball – The Red Devils got hot at the right point in the postseason to advance to the Class 1A state tournament for the third time in four years. The Red Devils went on to finish in the top six of the state tournament. Bradford finished the season with a 24-18 record, finishing as the District 13-1A and Region 7-1A runners-up before sweeping Middle College in a sectional series.

11. South Gibson girls tennis – For the third straight season, the Lady Hornets won the District 14-AA championship. South Gibson beat Chester County 4-3 in the district championship match. McKenzie Scherer and Ivy Cianciolo won singles matches, while Caroline Shelton and Scherer as well as Kayla Miller and Cianciolo won doubles matches to secure the win. Scherer also became the first singles district champion in program history.

12. Gibson County girls basketball – The Lady Pioneers fell one game short of reaching a sixth straight Class 2A state tournament. Gibson County went 24-11 as the team finished as the District 14-2A and Region 7-2A runner-up behind Westview. The Lady Pioneers went to Memphis Business and suffered a 47-45 loss to have the season end in sectionals.

13. Peabody boys basketball – The Golden Tide reached the Class 2A sectionals, falling one win short of a berth into the state tournament. Peabody finished as the District 14-2A runner-up to Westview and the Region 7-2A runner-up to Jackson Central-Merry. The team lost to Memphis Business 69-61 in sectionals to end the season. Peabody finished with a 24-8 record.

14. Milan baseball – The Bulldogs finished the season by making their fourth straight appearance in the Class 2A sectionals. Milan was the No. 2 seed in the District 14-2A tournament. The team finished as the district tournament runner-up and Region 7-2A runner-up, earning a spot in the Class 2A sectionals, opposite Lakeland Prep. Milan won Game 1 of the sectional series before losing the next two to finish 18-18.

15. Milan boys soccer – The Bulldogs reached the Class A sectionals for the second straight season, but couldn’t get the win to earn the program’s first state tournament berth. Milan went 13-6-1, posting the most wins in program history. The Bulldogs were the District 14-A and Region 7-A runners-up to Madison. The team was forced to travel to Lakeland Prep for sectionals and lost 6-0.
