Top 12 high school teams in Weakley County from the 2024-25 season

Last week, we looked at the top 15 most memorable games involving Weakley County teams during the 2024-25 school year. Now we look back at the best teams to come out of this county last year.
There were a few state championships brought back to the county and a few teams finished as state runners-up.
1. Westview girls basketball – The Lady Chargers made a state-best 13th straight appearance in the Class 2A state tournament and won the state championship for the third time in four years. Westview suffered one loss in mid-December to finish the season with a 33-1 record. The Lady Chargers won the District 14-2A and Region 7-2A championships before beating Trezevant in sectionals at home. In the state tournament, they beat East Nashville 48-30, Loretto 64-39 and York Institute 44-38. Maddie Gray was named a Class 2A Miss Basketball finalist and was the 2024-25 All-Weakley County girls basketball player of the year.
2. Westview football – The Chargers held a 14-0 record going into the Class 3A state championship game before losing to Alcoa 40-21. Westview won the Region 7-3A championship with a 59-54 win over Covington. Freshman quarterback Graham Simpson broke the state record for passing yards in a game as he completed 32-of-46 passes for 624 yards and a school-record eight touchdowns. Westview shutout four opponents and held three others to one touchdown or less. Simpson was named a Tennessee Titans Class 3A Mr. Football finalist and the 2024-25 All-Weakley County football player of the year.
3. Greenfield girls basketball – The Lady Yellowjackets got hot at the right time to win the Class 1A state championship after finishing third in District 14-1A. Greenfield finished the season with a 30-6 record. Greenfield finished in a three-way tie for first place in District 14-1A during the regular season but lost to Union City in the district semifinals to finish third. But that is when the Lady Yellowjackets got hot. The team beat Humboldt, Union City and Dresden to win the Region 7-1A title, beat University High-Memphis in sectionals and beat North Greene, Richland and Van Buren County to win the Class 1A title. Sophomore Rayanna Fisher was named the state tournament MVP.
- 4. Westview girls soccer – The Lady Chargers became the first public school in West Tennessee to advance to the Class 1A state championship match. Westview finished with an 18-6-1 record on the way to the state runner-up finish. Westview won the District 12-A and Region 6-A championships before beating Huntland in a sectional. At the state tournament, the Lady Chargers beat Lakeland Prep 4-0 and CSAS 5-1 to advance to the title game.
5. Westview softball – The Lady Chargers were one of the best teams in West Tennessee throughout the 2025 season. Even with Tennessee signee McCall Sims missing three weeks after an appendectomy, Westview won the District 14-2A regular season title and tournament title before going on to win the Region 7-2A championship. The Lady Chargers advanced to state on a forfeit and beat Kingston 8-0 to finish in the top six of the Class 2A state tournament.
6. Westview baseball – For the first time in program history, the Chargers reached the Class 2A state tournament. Westview won the District 14-2A regular season and tournament titles and beat Riverside and Adamsville to win the Region 7-2A championship. After a pair of wins over Trezevant, the Chargers were headed to the state tournament, and a 2-0 win over Sweetwater put Westview in the top six of the state tournament.
7. Dresden softball – The Lady Lions advance to the Class 1A state tournament for the third time in four years. Under first-year head coach Aalia Bivens, Dresden won the District 14-1A and Region 7-1A championships before earning a spot in the state tournament on a forfeit. The Lady Lions scored 12 runs in the state tournament and finished in the top eight of the state.
8. Dresden girls basketball – The Lady Lions made a postseason run to the Class 1A sectionals before losing to Middle College, one win short of a berth in the state tournament. Dresden finished the season with a 22-10 record. Dresden finished in a three-way tie for first in the district and earned the No. 1 seed through tiebreakers. The Lady Lions finished as the District 14-1A and Region 7-1A runner-up to earn a spot in sectionals.
9. Westview boys basketball – The Chargers made a run to the Region 7-2A semifinals before falling to Jackson Central-Merry, who reached the quarterfinals of the Class 2A state tournament. Westview started slow as the football team played into December, but the team finished with a 19-10 record. The Chargers were the regular season runners-up in District 14-2A but won the district tournament title on the way to reaching the region semifinals.
10. Gleason boys basketball – The Bulldogs reached the Region 7-1A tournament for the second straight season. Gleason went 18-13, finishing as the District 14-1A regular season and tournament runner-up before losing in the region quarterfinals to Halls.
11. Dresden baseball – The Lions got hot at the right time and finished third in the Region 7-1A tournament. After losing the district tournament opener to Lake County, Dresden won three games to get back to the championship game before losing to Union City 1-0 to finish runner-up. In the region tournament, Dresden opened with a 10-0 win over Halls before losing to Union City and Bradford to finish third.
12. Greenfield baseball – The Yellowjackets had one of the best regular seasons in program history from the past decade. Greenfield finished with a 19-6 record, but the team was the No. 1 seed in the District 14-1A tournament after going 9-1 before losses to Union City and Dresden eliminated them.
