Top 15 most memorable games in Weakley County during 2024-25 school year

The 2024-25 school year was full of great moments across the county in high school athletics. When I sat down to write this list, I had 30 memorable games come to mind.
But the list has been whittled down to the top 15 most memorable games that included Weakley County area teams.
1. Westview girls basketball wins 2A state championship over York Institute – For the third time in four years, the Lady Chargers lifted the gold ball as state champions. Westview beat Iowa State signee Reese Beaty and York Institute 44-38 to win the title to finish 33-1 on the season. With 2:28 to play, the Lady Chargers trailed 38-34 after two free throws by Beaty. Halle Trevathan hit a corner 3-pointer with 2:01 to play to cut York Institute’s lead to 38-37. But the biggest play came with 50.6 seconds on the clock as Maddie Gray drove to the right side of the basket and put up a layup. She was fouled by Beaty – her fifth foul of the game. The basket went in as did the free throw, and Westview led 40-38. Gray finished with 18 points, three rebounds and two assists.
2. Greenfield girls basketball wins 1A state championship over Van Buren County – For the first time since winning the state championship in 2018, the Lady Yellowjackets raised the gold ball after beating Van Buren County 49-46 to finish the season with a 30-6 record. Greenfield trailed 37-25 going into the fourth quarter. But with under a minute to play, Jayleigh Bowers tipped a Van Buren pass under the basket to Rayanna Fisher for the layup and a 47-46 lead with 55 seconds to play. After a defensive stop, Fisher hit two free throws with 14.8 seconds remaining to secure the gold ball. Fisher had 14 points, two rebounds and three steals. Bowers had 13 points, four rebounds and one steal.
3. Westview girls soccer advances to first-ever state title match with win over CSAS – For the first time in program history – and the first time for a West Tennessee public school, the Lady Chargers earned a spot in the Class 1A state championship match. Westview beat Chattanooga School of the Arts & Sciences 5-1 in the state semifinals. Ashlee Brent scored the opening goal eight minutes into the match. Chanler Spendlove and Brent scored two goals each, and Brent added an assist. Hayden Markowski had one goal.
4. Westview football wins Region 7-3A title over Covington – To be one of the best in Class 3A, Westview had to beat a team that has consistently been among the best in West Tennessee for over a decade. Westview beat Covington 59-54 in Week 11 to earn the No. 1 spot in Region 7-3A. Freshman quarterback Graham Simpson broke the TSSAA state record for passing yards with 624 yards. He completed 32-of-46 passes and a school-record eight touchdown passes. The game featured Simpson – one of the top quarterback recruits in the country – and 2024 Class 3A Mr. Football winner Skylan Smith. Smith accounted for 292 total yards with six touchdowns as he rushed for 197 yards and five touchdowns.
5. Gleason softball scored five runs in the seventh inning to eliminate South Fulton – After scoring 10 unanswered runs in two innings to win the second matchup of the regular season, the Lady Bulldogs had to rally again to eliminate South Fulton in the District 14-1A tournament. South Fulton led 10-6 after five innings, but in the bottom of the seventh inning, Olivia Scarbrough hit an RBI single, Addy Black hit an RBI single, Kadence Witherspoon hit an RBI single and Zoey Healy hit a two-RBI single to walk off the victory.
6. Dresden softball rallies to win Region 7-1A title over Halls – Before clinching the third state tournament berth in four years, the Lady Lions were in a battle with Halls for the Region 7-1A championship. Dresden scored one run in the fourth, but Halls scored four runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a 4-1 lead. Allyssa Wilson hit an RBI single, Jacie West hit an RBI single with Gracie Adams scoring on the throw to tie the game 4-4, Molly Robinson scored on a fielder’s choice for the lead and Di Pietro hit a sacrifice bunt for the 6-4 win.
7. Greenfield girls basketball holds on to beat Union City in the Region 7-1A semifinals – After losing to Union City in the District 14-1A semifinals, the Lady Yellowjackets eliminated the Lady Tornadoes with a 41-37 win in the region semifinals. Greenfield’s defense held the Lady Tornadoes to three points in the opening quarter and took a 12-3 lead. The Lady Tornadoes chipped back in the game, but a missed layup late with Greenfield grabbing the rebound proved to be the difference. Rayanna FIsher scored 18 points in the win, while Ella Porter added 13 points.
8. Westview girls basketball earns a spot in 2A title game with win over Loretto – Last season, the Lady Chargers’ postseason run came to a close in the Class 2A quarterfinals to Loretto. Westview’s defensive effort set the tone as it held Loretto to four points in the first quarter, and Miss Basketball finalist Ally Weathers was held to nine points in the game. The defense also held Loretto to nine points in the fourth quarter. Maddie Gray recorded a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds to go with two assists, two blocked shots and a steal. Alexis Evans scored 16 points with five rebounds, two assists and two steals.
9. Westview baseball plays solid defense to beat Sweetwater in 2A state tournament – In the program’s first-ever trip to the Class 2A state tournament, the Chargers managed to finish in the top six. Westview beat Sweetwater 2-0 to earn the finish. Anderson Cary pitched a two-hit shutout with four strikeouts and two walks to earn the win. The game was scoreless until the top of the fifth inning as CD Damron scored on an error for the 1-0 lead. Thomas Myers scored on an error in the sixth inning as Westview’s lead grew to 2-0. Myers went 2-for-4 with one run.
10. Dresden boys basketball beat South Fulton in three overtimes – 48 minutes wasn’t enough to decide a winner as the Lions went on the road to South Fulton. But after an extra 12 minutes, Dresden pulled out a 74-73 victory. Arden Smith finished with 28 points, while Ayden Flora added 16 points and Miles Collins and Landon Floyd finished with 13 points each. In the third overtime, Smith hit a 3-pointer and a layup, Flora hit two free throws and Collins hit a free throw as Dresden outscored the Red Devils 8-7 in the third overtime.
11. Dresden softball beats Union City to win District 14-1A title – After beating the Lady Tornadoes 4-1 earlier in the tournament, the Lady Lions had to win the championship 9-8 in nine innings. The game was tied 7-7 beginning after five innings and stayed that way going into the ninth inning. Union City took an 8-7 lead in the top of the inning, but Adams hit a two-RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the inning to walk it off. Allyssa Wilson went 4-for-5 with three runs, three stolen bases and one RBI.
12. Westview softball wins at Milan to force a second game for the regular season title – For the Lady Chargers to earn the right to host the District 14-1A tournament, they had to sweep the regular season series with Milan. The Lady Bulldogs took the 1-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning, but with two outs in the seventh inning, Sarah Beth Byars earned a walk on a full count, and Maddie Gray followed with a two-RBI triple to give Westview the 2-1 lead. Alexis Evans had a two run home run as Westview went on to win 4-2.
13. Greenfield boys basketball beats Lake County in DIstrict 14-1A tournament – In a win-or-go-home game, the Yellowjackets beat third-seeded Lake County 68-64 to earn a spot in the region tournament. Greenfield led 51-48 going into the fourth quarter. Anthony Green hit three baskets to go with 2-of-3 shooting from the free throw line to help the Yellowjackets stay in the lead. Easton Sullivan scored 17 points to lead Greenfield, while Cruze Porter and Green added 13 points each and Sparkman finished with 11 points.
14. Gleason softball scores 10 unanswered runs to beat South Fulton in regular season – With the No. 3 seed in the District 14-1A tournament on the line, the Lady Bulldogs trailed 10-2 going into the sixth inning, but they scored 10 unanswered runs to win 12-10. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Ava Bennett hit an RBI single, Addy Black, Marley Crews and Bennett scored on bases-loaded walks and Scarbrough hit a two-RBI double to cut the deficit to 10-8. In the bottom of the seventh, Black hit an RBI single, Zoey Healy hit an RBI groundout and Sophie Bealey walked it off with a two-RBI single.
15. Westview girls soccer beats Lakeland Prep in Class A quarterfinals – After earning the first-ever win in the Class 1A state tournament the previous season, the Lady Chargers had to do it again. Westview faced a familiar foe in Lakeland Prep and picked up a 4-0 victory in the Class A quarterfinals. Westview outshot Lakeland Prep 23-5. The Lady Chargers got goals out of Harper Jones, Maddie Horton and Chanler Spendlove with the other goal coming on an own goal off a Ashlee Brent free kick.
