Vic vs. Odom: High School Football Pick’em Week 7

South Gibson’s Drey Scott (24) scores a touchdown after catching a pass against Chester County during a Region 6-4A contest on Sept. 26, 2024.

“Why are you carrying around a crystal ball?” Victor Parkins asked as I walked in the office on Monday.

“I have to figure out a new way to pick the Milan games,” I said. “Every week is a new surprise. I was confident they would beat Jackson Central-Merry. Wrong. So I lost confidence and picked Huntingdon. Wrong. They have their best defensive game of the season.”

“Well, I picked that one correctly,” Parkins said with a laugh.

“Well, I am tired of being heckled by Lincoln Reel at church when I miss the Milan pick,” I joked.

“Lincoln along with the other members of that defensive line like Markel Cunningham and Mikkel Cunningham were a difference maker on Thursday,” Parkins said.

“For the first time this year, I can heckle you for beating you,” I said.

“Here we go,” Parkins said with an eye roll.

I got the best of Parkins by two games this week. I went 11-3, while Parkins went 9-5. The Covington-Fairley game was not played due to weather, so only 14 picks counted this week.

We both missed Chester County’s win over South Gibson and Dyer County’s win over Crockett County. I also missed Milan’s win over Huntingdon, while Parkins missed MASE’s win over Peabody, Dresden’s win over Obion County and Dyersburg’s win over North Side.

So overall, Parkins is 72-17 (.809 winning percentage), while I am now 69-20 (.775), so Parkins stays in the lead but only by three games.

Week 7 is sure to bring some more excitement:

South Gibson (3-3) at Dyer County (5-1)

The Hornets will face one of the top running backs in West Tennessee in Ja’bari Livingston. The defense will have to tackle well to have a shot.

Odom’s Pick: Dyer County 24, South Gibson 21

Vic’s Pick: Dyer County 21, South Gibson 20

Milan (5-1, 3-1 6-2A) at Adamsville (3-3, 0-3)

The Bulldogs are coming off the biggest win of the season. But Adamsville is not a bad team, so Wade Comer will have them refocused to go back on the road. And if Milan’s defense plays like it did last week, a win is probable.

Odom’s Pick: Milan 32, Adamsville 6

Vic’s Pick: Milan 42, Adamsville 14

Peabody (2-4, 2-1 6-2A) at Camden (3-3, 1-3)

Despite being 0-3 in non-region contests, a win here puts the Golden Tide one win out of first place in Region 6-2A. Expect another strong performance by the Peabody defense to shut down Camden’s offense.

Odom’s Pick: Peabody 34, Camden 12

Vic’s Pick: Peabody 41, Camden 20

Humboldt (2-4, 0-3 7-1A) at Halls (6-0, 3-0)

The Tigers are the biggest surprise in Region 7-1A this season. The Vikings would need to play their best game of the season to be victorious in this one.

Odom’s Pick: Halls 38, Humboldt 16

Vic’s Pick: Halls 50, Humboldt 22

Stewart County (0-6) at Gibson County (0-6)

This is the best chance for Kyle Pack to get a win in his first year in charge of the Pioneers. Gibson County has worked hard to improve, and the rewards will come in this one.

Odom’s Pick: Gibson County 21, Stewart County 13

Vic’s Pick: Gibson County 21, Stewart County 14

West Carroll (3-2, 1-1 0-1) at McEwen (2-3, 0-1)

Both teams had their bye week last week, so both should be healthy for this one. This game is huge in the Region 6-1A standings, so expect a big game from Jayden Milton.

Odom’s Pick: West Carroll 28, McEwen 21

Vic’s Pick: West Carroll 40, McEwen 28

That was definitely a slip-up and one of the top matchups in Week 7. Sorry for not seeing that one on the list.
