Vic vs. Odom: High School Football Pick’em Week 3

Peabody’s Jamarcus Haynes (7) tries to avoid a tackle from South Gibson’s Matthew Austin (23) during a high school football jamboree.
Buzz, buzz, buzz.
On a Friday night, I knew this was going to be a football coach with something to say about a football game.
And, it was Johnnie Frost, the head coach of the defending Class 2A state champions Riverside.
It read, “Please keep picking against us. It gives me great bulletin board material for my team. Ha.”
Of course, that was the lone game that Victor Parkins and myself differed on in the Week 2 pick’em contest.
I replied, “Yea, yea, yea. Glad I could help. Lol.”
That has been the way things have gone with my picks involving Riverside games since I started picking in 2010 as part of a different publication.
I also replied, “No promises this week. You have a Gibson County team coming to town to open region play.”
Parkins extended his lead on me by one game, upping the lead to four games. He picked Riverside, while I picked Lexington. We both missed two games involving Gibson County teams as we were wrong on Humboldt’s win over Scotts Hill and Tipton-Rosemark’s win over Gibson County.
So overall, Parkins is 26-4 (.867 winning percentage), while I am now 22-8 (.733).
Here is for the opening of region play in Week 3:
Peabody (0-2) at Riverside (1-1)
This game could have huge playoff implications at the end of October. Both teams made the playoffs last year, but the Panthers are the team that has a win this season.
Odom’s Pick: Riverside 27, Peabody 21
Vic’s Pick: Riverside 31, Peabody 14
Hardin County (1-1) at South Gibson (1-1)
Both of these teams hosted playoff games in the opening round of the Class 4A playoffs after finishing first and second in Region 6-4A. Both teams have question marks after two weeks of the season, so finding answers will be key this week.
Odom’s Pick: Hardin County 21, South Gibson 17
Vic’s Pick: South Gibson 21, Hardin County 14
Humboldt (1-1) at Harding Academy (1-1)
The Vikings picked up their first win since Oct. 7, 2022 last week by beating Scotts Hill by 14 points. Quarterback KD Taylor threw for over 250 yards last week, and he could do the same in this one.
Odom’s Pick: Humboldt 21, Harding Academy 12
Vic’s Pick: Humboldt 28, Harding Academy 13
Milan (2-0) at Gibson County (0-2)
The Bulldogs’ offense has been tough to stop in the first two weeks of the season. Expect much of the same this week with the starters getting some rest in the second half.
Odom’s Pick: Milan 42, Gibson County 13
Vic’s Pick: Milan 58, Gibson County 7
FACS (0-0) at West Carroll (2-0)
FACS hasn’t played a game yet. The Crusaders were on a bye in Week 1, and last week’s game against Lakeland Prep was canceled due to lightning. That could be a positive for the War Eagles as they try to improve to 3-0.
Odom’s Pick: West Carroll 18, FACS 12
Vic’s Pick: West Carroll 28, FACS 14
