Top 15 high school athletic performances in Weakley County during 2023-24 season

With the Dead Period now here, we will end our look back at the 2023-24 school year this week. We have looked at the most memorable games, top teams and top coaching jobs in the county this past season, so now we will look at the top athletic performances in a single season.
1. Cameron Schlicht (Dresden football, Sr.) – Schlicht was a three-sport athlete for the Lions this past school year, but the sport where he excelled the most was on the football field. Schlicht was a finalist for the Class 1A Mr. Football award as he led Dresden to the Class 1A semifinals, finishing with a 13-1 record.
He recorded 3,395 total yards of offense. He threw for 2,394 yards with 28 touchdowns and four interceptions, and he rushed for 1,001 yards and 18 touchdowns.
2. McCall Sims (Westview basketball/softball, Jr.) – Picking her best season was too tough to call. On the basketball court, she helped lead the Lady Chargers to a 12th straight appearance in the Class 2A state tournament. On the softball field, she led the Lady Chargers to a semifinal appearance in the Class 2A state tournament.
The Tennessee softball commitment batted .658 with 50 hits, 46 RBI, 12 home runs and 40 runs, while going 15-6 as a pitcher in 139.2 innings, including 242 strikeouts and a 1.15 ERA. On the basketball court, she averaged 14.3 points, 3.7 rebounds and 2.2 assists, while shooting 39.8 percent from the field.
3. Tristan Jett (Dresden football, Sr.) – While Schlicht got the accolades for the Lions’ success on the gridiron this season, Jett’s contributions were key to Dresden’s run to the Class 1A state semifinals with 13 wins. He recorded 2,232 yards of total offense and 38 touchdowns. He had 1,892 yards rushing.
4. Eva Stafford (Dresden softball, Sr.) – The Jackson State signee was dominant in the circle as she led the Lady Lions to a perfect 15-0 regular season. Dresden lost 1-0 twice in the postseason, but she did her best to keep Dresden in the game. She finished the season 15-2 with 163 strikeouts for a total of 823. She also had an ERA of 0.26 this season.
5. Drake Lehmkuhl (Gleason boys basketball, So.) – Lehmkuhl helped the Bulldogs to their best season in over 50 years. He led Gleason to a runner-up finish in District 14-1A and to the Region 7-1A semifinals before losing to Humboldt. He averaged 20 points, 5.7 rebounds and 1.4 steals, while shooting 46 percent from two-point range.
6. Luke Stephenson (Westview boys golf, Jr.) – Stephenson led the Chargers back to the Class A state tournament. He averaged a 77.25 through four rounds of postseason play. He shot a 75 in the District 12-A tournament, 80 in the Region 6-A tournament and finished 11th in the state with a 154 (77-77).
7. Chloe Peevyhouse (Westview girls soccer, Sr.) – Peevyhouse helped the Lady Chargers make program history as they reached the Class A state semifinals. She recorded 11 shutouts in 20 matches.
8. Autumn Mingle (Gleason girls basketball, Sr.) – Mingle led the Lady Bulldogs in every statistical category offensively as she helped them reach the Region 7-1A quarterfinals before losing to Humboldt. She averaged 18.6 points, 6.2 rebounds, 3.3 steals and 2.2 assists, while shooting 39.1 percent from the field.
9. Maddie Horton (Westview girls soccer, So.) – Horton led the Lady Chargers in goals and assists as she helped them to the Class 1A state semifinals. She finished the season with 24 goals and 15 assists.
10. Brenley Little (Dresden girls track & field, Jr.) – Little reached the Class A-AA state meet in cross country in the fall after finishing sixth in the Region 7 A-AA meet with a time of 21:35.70. At state, she finished 26th with a time of 20:31.12. In the spring, she reached the Class A state track & field meet, finishing fourth in the 3200-meter runs with a time of 12:34.33.
11. Halle Trevathan (Westview girls cross country, Jr.) – Trevathan reached the Class A-AA state meet after finishing runner-up in the Region 7 A-AA meet with a time of 20:43.49. At state, she finished 32nd with a time of 20:41.29.
12. Rayanna Fisher (Greenfield girls basketball, Fr.) – Fisher helped lead the Lady Yellowjackets to the Class 1A state semifinals in her rookie season. She averaged 14 points, five rebounds, 2.8 assists and 2.4 steals.
13. Gabe Gilliam (Westview boys soccer, Sr.) – Gilliam helped lead the Chargers back to the Class A state tournament, winning the District 12-A championship along the way and a penalty-kick shootout in sectionals. He recorded six clean sheets in 20 matches.
14. Easton Sullivan (Greenfield baseball, So.) – Sullivan is a three-sport athlete for the Yellowjackets, but it is on the baseball diamond where he shines the best. He batted .480 with two home runs, eight triples and 12 doubles this season. On the mound, we went 7-4 with a 2.04 ERA and 94 strikeouts in 48 innings pitched.
15. Nick Turnbow (Dresden football, Sr.) – Turnbow helped the Lions reach the Class 1A semifinals with 13 wins as he recorded 1,345 yards of total offense with 13 touchdowns. He had 1,019 yards receiving on 52 catches.
