Washer pitchin’ kicks off Friday in Yorkville

By Lori Cathey

The 25th Annual International Washer Pitchin’ Contest will be held at the Yorkville City Park on Saturday, but the fun starts Friday night.

The Yorkville Fire Department is hosting a fish fry Friday beginning at 5 p.m. at the Yorkville Community Center. Plates include fish, fries, homemade hush puppies and onion rings, slaw, white beans and Southern iced tea. Cost is $10 per plate, but donations are also appreciated. Proceeds benefit the Fire Dept.

Washer pitchers from across the globe will test their skills Saturday in hopes of claiming the top prize. The junior contest for children age 12 and under starts at 10 a.m. Entry fee is $5. Adult competitors (age 13 and up) must register by 11 a.m. Singles pay $5, and doubles pay $10 per team.

Opening ceremonies will start at 12 p.m. in the Yorkville Community Center. The singles’ contest begins at 12:30, and doubles will start when the singles end, usually about 2:30. An awards ceremony will follow.

Concessions will be available throughout the day. There will also be a Boston butt and barbecue sale. Pre-order butts for $35, barbecue for $7 per pound and barbecue bologna for $6 per pound.

Special 25th anniversary t-shirts may be pre-ordered for $20.
