Bailadores celebrate 56th Baile
Mary Key Roe crowned 2017 Marquesa
The New Southern Hotel, Jackson, Tennessee was the setting on May 27, 2017 for the 56th Baile for the gentlemen and wives of Bailadores. The New Southern was also the original venue in the late 1950s for this organization. Bailadores is a wonderful tradition for a select group of Humboldtans who have over the years come together for a beautiful black tie party of dining and dancing. This year’s party chairman was Steve Hamilton.
Guests arrived and mingled in the New Southern’s lobby for cocktails and hors d’oeuvres while being entertained with symphony music. Guests were greeted by this year’s president, Doug Short and the reigning Marquesa Mrs. Shane (Libby) Lynch.
Members and their guests were then invited upstairs to the Gold Room for a wonderful night of dining and dancing to the music of Juliet and the Romeos.
At the ten o’clock hour President Short took to the stage and recognized Dr. Herman R. Stallings and Mr. Turner O. Lashlee as two of the original cadre of Bailadores. These gentlemen were honored and given a standing ovation for their long tradition and dedication with Bailadores. Then as in years past, the former Marquesas attending were announced and escorted to the stage by their husbands as party chairman Hamilton presented each with a long stem red rose. The 2017 Marquesa revealed was Mrs. Bill (Mary Key) Roe. She was crowned and presented roses by Mrs. Lynch and the traditional dance of the Marquesas to “Hello Dolly” followed.
