“Please pass me the Tums,” I groaned Monday morning as I sat at my desk.
“Something not agree with you from Sunday lunch?,” Union City Messenger sports editor Gabriel Jackson replied.
“No, I went to the Gibson County Fair on Saturday,” I groaned. “Cotton candy, fried oreos, funnel cake, candy apples and sno cones. I think I ate a little too much.”
“Well, it’s Labor Day, so let’s get these stories done and get out of here,” Jackson said. “I heard that Blake’s has a good bar-be-que deal going on today.”
“I think I will abstain today,” I said as I popped another Tums.
I had one of my best weeks as I went 13-2, while Jackson went 11-4.
I was a perfect 6-0 with my picks involving teams in Obion and Weakley County and am now 18-1 (.947 winning percentage), while Jackson went 5-1 to sit at 10-9 (.526) in the two counties. Jackson’s miss this week in the two counties was Riverside beating Union City.
We both missed Bolton’s win over Fayette-Ware and Chester County’s win over South Gibson, while Jackson also missed Lexington’s win over Crockett County.
After three weeks, I am 39-7 (.848) on the season, while Jackson is 30-16 (.652).
So is Week 4 when Jackson starts to make his move?
Obion County (3-0, 0-0 7-3A) at Westview (3-0, 0-0)
Both teams enter this week undefeated, but the Chargers have played three quality opponents, while the Rebels’ three opponents are a combined 1-8.
Odom’s Pick: Westview 45, Obion County 7
Jackson’s Pick: Westview 49, Obion County 12
Greenfield (2-1, 0-0 7-1A) at South Fulton (1-1, 0-1)
The Red Devils are coming off a big loss to Humboldt, while Greenfield’s passing game figured some things out to beat Bruceton at home. This game is sure to have playoff implications come the end of October.
Odom’s Pick: Greenfield 28, South Fulton 21
Jackson’s Pick: South Fulton 38, Greenfield 32
Gleason (0-3, 0-0 7-1A) at Dresden (1-2, 1-0)
The Lions got some big numbers out of young players last week to beat West Carroll. Can the Lions do it again and go 2-0 in Region 7-1A? Or will Gleason pick up their first win of the season?
Odom’s Pick: Dresden 33, Gleason 6
Jackson’s Pick: Dresden 26, Gleason 7
Crittenden County (Ky.) (1-2) at Union City (0-3)
The Golden Tornadoes have been right there against some quality teams. But can they turn the corner and get one in the win column? Crittenden County lost its first two games of the season, but had a mercy-ruled win in Week 3.
Odom’s Pick: Union City 32, Crittenden County 18
Jackson’s Pick: Union City 28, Crittenden County 20
