“College football is back!”
“Other than Memphis beating UNLV, what was there really to watch?” Gabriel Jackson replied sitting in our office Monday morning.
“It doesn’t matter, there was football in Dublin, Ireland yesterday, there was an ACC matchup,” I replied. “But the key is college football is back, so all is right with the world.”
“Well, Saturday is over and there is no more football until Thursday, so how about finding your top performers and learn about the Week 3 game of week, so we can record the ‘Mid-Week Huddle,’” Jackson chuckled.
“Well, I am just as excited about my results last week in our football contest,” I responded.
“Oh, brother, here we go…” Jackson said with an eye roll.
I beat Jackson for the second straight week as I went 12-3, while he went 10-5.
Looking at our Weakley County and Obion County picks, I went 6-1 and am now 12-1 (.923 winning percentage) in our two counties, while Jackson went 3-4 and is now 5-8 (.385) in the counties.
We both missed Stewart County beating Greenfield, while Jackson missed McKenzie’s win over Dresden, Bruceton’s win over Gleason and South Fulton’s win over Fulton County (Ky.). Jackson’s lone miss outside of our two counties was Lexington beating Riverside.
On the season, I am 26-5 (.839) overall, while Jackson is 19-12 (.613) overall.
Can Jackson get some games back on me this week?
Marshall County (1-1) at Westview (2-0)
The Chargers have a short week after playing Saturday night to try and be ready for a tough 4A Marshall County team. This team scored 43 points on Shelbyville last Thursday. But Westview has more weapons.
Odom’s Pick: Westview 42, Marshall County 21
Jackson’s Pick: Westview 42, Marshall County 12
Bruceton (2-0) at Greenfield (1-1)
The Yellowjackets have to put the one-point loss to Stewart County behind them. Bruceton is unbeaten, but the Tigers beat Gleason and Scotts Hill, who are a combined 0-4 right now. Greenfield’s defense will be key here.
Odom’s Pick: Greenfield 27, Bruceton 21
Jackson’s Pick: Greenfield 35, Bruceton 24
West Carroll (0-2) at Dresden (0-2)
The Lions have played a tough schedule the first two weeks of the season with a Division II-A state semifinalist and the Class 1A state runner-up. Now they get to Region 7-1A play, and this is one that Dresden can earn that first win.
Odom’s Pick: Dresden 21, West Carroll 12
Jackson’s Pick: Dresden 36, West Carroll 0
Obion County (2-0) at Gleason (0-2)
These are two teams on different levels right now. Obion County is off to a hot start, while the Bulldogs are still learning with lots of inexperience on the field.
Odom’s Pick: Obion County 38, Gleason 6
Jackson’s Pick: Obion County 42, Gleason 6
Riverside (1-1) at Union City (0-2)
The Golden Tornadoes have played two quality teams and came up short both times. Riverside played 4A Lexington tough and only lost by six points. A win here could really spark either team’s season, so expect both to come out fighting.
Odom’s Pick: Riverside 21, Union City 18
Jackson’s Pick: Union City 24, Riverside 14
South Fulton (1-0) at Humboldt (2-0)
The Red Devils got their first game under their belt after not playing in Week 1. But the Vikings have been rolling like a region champion type team. South Fulton will have to find a way to combat Humboldt’s athleticism.
Odom’s Pick: Humboldt 34, South Fulton 16
Jackson’s Pick: Humboldt 35, South Fulton 32
