Westview’s Asa Barnes commits to Tennessee

Westview senior Asa Barnes became the second football player of the summer to make his college commitment on Wednesday.

In Westview’s gymnasium, Barnes chose Tennessee over Arkansas, Florida State and University of Southern California. Barnes had over 20 offers before narrowing it to those four.

Teammate Miles Brown made his college commitment in May to the University of Kentucky.

Barnes helped lead the Chargers to the Class 3A state championship last year with a 14-0 record.

Last season, he rushed for 1,270 yards and 25 touchdowns on 146 carries to go with 567 receiving yards and six touchdowns on 27 receptions.

Barnes is listed at 5-foot-11 and 200 pounds, and he is ranked as the No. 40 running back in the class of 2027 and the No. 24 senior in the state, according to 247Sports. He is currently a three-star recruit by 247Sports Composite.

He has visited the Vols four times with the most recent visit coming on June 19, and he becomes the 19th commitment in the class of 2027.

Barnes also helped lead the boys basketball team to the Class 2A state championship game as he averaged 6.2 points, 4.5 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.4 steals.

Barnes and his Westview teammates open the 2026 season on Aug. 21 against Memphis Academy of Science & Engineering in Memphis.
