As I raced to my desk Monday morning, Victor Parkins yelled, “Slow it down. No need to trample people this early on a Monday morning.”

“Sorry, but this is the final week for high school coaches and media to nominate players for the Tennessee Titans Mr. Football award, and after Friday night, there is one name that needs to be on the ballot,” I replied.

“I can guess what name that is,” Parkins replied. “Does he wear purple and play on both sides of the football?”

“That is a good start,” I laughed.

“Was he named the 2023 All-Gibson County football player of the year?” Parkins chuckled.

“Yep, I think you got it,” I replied. “My nomination is for Jaydon Peete to be among the semifinalists and finalists for the Class 2A award.”

“Well, I think you have a good nominee right there,” Parkins replied.

“And I have four more games to pick better than your picks, and we will be tied in our pick’em competition,” I said.

I went 14-1 last week, while Parkins went 13-2. We both missed Hardin County’s win over South Side, and Parkins missed South Fulton’s win over Halls.

So overall, Parkins is 121-25 (.829 winning percentage), while I am now 117-29 (.801), as I cut Parkins’ lead to four games.

Now we prepare for the final week of the regular season (Week 11):

Riverside (6-3, 4-2 6-2A) at Milan (8-1, 5-1)

A win and the Bulldogs are the Region 6-2A champions and a No. 1 seed in the Class 2A playoffs. A loss and Milan’s fate is in other teams’ hands on where it will finish. The Bulldogs are hungry for a region title for the first time since 2020.

South Gibson (4-5, 2-2 6-4A) at South Side (2-6, 0-4)

The Hornets are the No. 3 seed from Region 6-4A, and South Side has no path to the playoffs. So the key is staying injury-free and preparing for a road trip in the first round of the playoffs.

Huntingdon (7-2, 5-1 6-2A) at Peabody (4-5, 4-2)

After last week’s loss to Milan, the Golden Tide are facing pretty close to a must-win situation. A win coupled with a Milan win, and Peabody is the No. 2 seed from Region 6-2A. But a loss, and Peabody could be on the outside looking in on the playoff picture

Gibson County (1-8, 0-6 6-2A) at JCM (7-2, 4-2)

The Pioneers have struggled against the top five teams in Region 6-2A. JCM is looking to stay in the playoff picture and earn the best spot possible with a win in this one.

South Fulton (7-2, 4-2 7-1A) at Humboldt (3-6, 1-5)

The Red Devils are looking at a home playoff game next week. Humboldt would love to earn the win and take momentum into the offseason.
