Vic vs. Odom: High School Football Pick’em Week 8

“This seems like a dumb question and it is, but why are you wearing a party hat?” Victor Parkins said as I was sitting in my office chair Monday morning.

“It’s celebration time, right?” I replied.

“Why are we celebrating?” Victor answered back.

“Well, isn’t there plenty to celebrate?” I said. “It is Fall Break, so it is a light week of football. We have celebrated two coaching moments over the past couple of weeks as Shane Jacobs reached his 100th win with Peabody, and Friday night, Kyle Pack picked up his first win at his alma mater Gibson County.

“And don’t forget, Victor, the Milan Fall Festival is this Saturday, and I am excited to eat food from some great vendors and enjoy the people of Milan.

“True,” Parkins said. “But that party hat still looks dumb. And you definitely aren’t celebrating a second win over me.”

And Parkins is correct as we differed on one game, and he got it correct as South Side beat Bolivar.

Parkins went 12-3 last week, while I went 11-4. We both missed McEwen beating West Carroll, Huntingdon beating Riverside and Northpoint Christian beating University School of Jackson.

So overall, Parkins is 84-20 (.808 winning percentage), while I am now 80-24 (.769), so Parkins increased his lead to four games

Week 8 is a light week, but here we go:

Gleason (3-4, 0-4 7-1A) at Humboldt (2-5, 0-4)

The Vikings will have athletes, so Gleason’s defense is going to have to make some stops in the second half to give the offense opportunities to score. Four straight losses though gives the Vikings hope of a region win.

West Carroll (3-3, 1-2 6-1) at Bruceton (1-6, 0-2)

The War Eagles suffered some injuries last week in the loss to McEwen, but this game has the potential to decide who makes the playoffs and who will miss out on the playoffs.
