Drew Pirtle named boys basketball coach at South Gibson

On Wednesday, the South Gibson administration announced Drew Pirtle as the new boys basketball coach.

“We are excited to welcome Coach Pirtle and his wife, Andrea, to our Hornet family!,” South Gibson athletic director Mark Dunn said in a press release. “Coach Pirtle brings a great energy and work ethic that we know will help take the program to the next level. His strong faith and values will make him a perfect fit here at SGC!”

Pirtle replace Keith Runyon, who has coached the Hornets for the past three years, after Runyon announced his retirement in April.

“I’m honored to be named the Head Boys’ Basketball Coach at South Gibson County High School,” Pirtle said in the press release. “After spending some time with the leadership team at South Gibson throughout this process, I left with an understanding of what makes this community special. My wife and I have been praying for an opportunity like this, and we are thrilled to join the Hornet family. I’m forever thankful for the relationships I’ve built at JCS over these last five years. While it’s hard to say goodbye, the chance to lead the Hornets’ basketball program is a tremendous opportunity. I’m thankful to Mr. (Mark) Dunn and Principal (Phil) Rogers for entrusting this program to me, and I could not be more excited to get to work”

Pirtle served as the middle school boys basketball coach and assistant high school boys basketball coach at Jackson Christian the last five seasons under Kyle Teichmann.

Prior to coming to Jackson Christian, Pirtle was an assistant men’s basketball coach at Houghton College in New York. His first year at Houghton was the 2018-19 season.

Pirtle graduated high school at Columbia Academy, where he was a three-sport athlete playing basketball, football and soccer. He went on to play soccer at Freed-Hardeman and earned his bachelor’s degree in math and natural science in 2011. In 2018, he completed a Master’s degree in Coaching and Athletic Administration at Concordia University-Irvine.
